The Rockies will look to win the series this afternoon after last night’s weird win
The Colorado Rockies played a very Colorado Rockies game last night, but somehow they were able to pull out a win over the Washington Nationals on a walk-off walk/pitch clock violation (a clock off?). They made positive history as the first team in MLB history to win via a walk-off pitch clock violation. The win marked their fifth walk-off win of the season, including the second of this homestand. It was the 10th walk-off walk in franchise history (last: Brendon Rodgers, June 1, 2021 vs Texas Rangers). The Rockies have been involved in 10 walk-offs this year and are 5-5. They are tied with the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics for most in the Majors.
Kyle Freeland (0-3, 13.21 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies in his return from the 60-day IL with a left elbow strain. He has been out since April 19. Freeland made three rehab appearances with the ACL Rockies and Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes, combining to allow three runs across 10 innings with six hits, five walks and nine strikeouts. In his career, Freeland has gone 5-2 with a 2.31 ERA in eight starts against the Nationals — his lowest ERA against any single opponent (min. five start).
Freeland will face Nats’ righty Jake Irvin (5-6, 3.24 ERA). Irvin was the Nats’ fourth-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of Oklahoma and made his MLB debut last May. In his last outing, Irvin threw five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He will be facing the Rockies for the second time in his career (last: June 22, 2023 at Nationals Park). In that start, he threw six innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
