Márquez makes his triumphant return to Coors Field for the first time since 2023
The weather was cold and the bats were slightly colder for the Colorado Rockies in their home opener loss on Friday. The Rockies (1-6) are now tied for the worst start over the first seven games in franchise history and will look to right the ship and find some offensive momentum against the Athletics (3-5). The Rockies have scored a league-worst 14 runs over their first seven games.
Germán Márquez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) toes the rubber for his second start of the year. Márquez turned back the clock in his last outing against the Philadelphia Phillies, blazing through six scoreless innings, striking out four, and allowing just four hits. This will be the first time Márquez has pitched at home since 2023 when he allowed two runs on three hits over five innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. Starting pitching has been the pièce de résistance for the Rockies recently and the return of a strong Márquez performance has been a welcome sight.
The A’s will counter with JP Sears (0-1, 2.70 ERA) making his second start of the year. In his first outing, he went 6 2⁄3 innings against the Seattle Mariners, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Acquired from the New York Yankees in 2022, Sears has been a staple in the A’s rotation since 2023. The left-hander can be crafty, tallying the strikeouts while working quickly and efficiently. In his career, he has averaged about 16 pitches per inning and 3.8 pitches per plate appearance.
Will the Rockies succumb to their strikeout troubles or can they rally behind Márquez and get him some support?
