Can the Rockies avoid another first inning struggle to avoid the season sweep?
The first inning proved to be a big difference maker on Tuesday as the Houston Astros put up all five of their runs in the first inning, resulting in a Rockies 5-2 loss. Looking to avoid the four-game season sweep by the Astros, the Rockies will try to conquer some first inning demons.
They will send out Ryan Feltner who has had his own struggles in the first inning this season. Feltner (1-6, 6.02 ERA) has given up 15 runs on 21 hits in the first frame for a 9.00 ERA. His seven walks in the first are the highest of any other inning and opponents have a .333 AVG against him. In his last outing, he surrendered six runs on seven hits in five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers with two walks and six strikeouts. This season Feltner has yet to allow more than two walks in a start.
The Astros will send out Spencer Arrighetti. A 2021 sixth-round pick, Arrighetti has struggled a bit in his rookie season to the tune of a 3-6 record and a 6.36 ERA over 13 starts. Much like Feltner, he has shown glimpses of excellence on the mound but has also turned in some clunkers along the way. In June he has allowed 12 runs in 14 1⁄3 innings and has failed to complete five innings in three of his four starts this month. In his last outing against the Chicago White Sox he tossed 4 1⁄3 innings giving up three runs on five hits with four walks on 80 pitches.
