Who will win the battle of the two worst teams in MLB?
In a brutal June where Colorado has gone 6-18, including 2-12 in their last 14 games, the Rockies find themselves in a place to end the month on a high note with a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.
The series will pit the worst team in the National League, the 27-53 Rockies, against the worst team in the American League (and MLB overall), the 22-61 White Sox. The White Sox enter the series with a 7-18 mark in June and 4-10 in their last 14 games.
Dakota Hudson (2-10, 5.63 ERA) will be on the mound for the Rockies. Hudson was roughed up in his last outing when he gave up eight runs on 11 hits, including two homers, with two walks in three innings against the Nationals on June 21.
Drew Thorpe (1-1, 5.02 ERA) is getting the start for Chicago. The 23-year-old RHP was a second-round draft pick by the New York Yankees in 2022 before being part of the Juan Soto trade that sent him to the San Diego Padres in December of 2023. He then was shipped to Chicago as part of the Dylan Cease trade in March.
Thorpe made his MLB debut on June 11 and Friday night’s start will be his fourth career start. Thorpe only gave up one earned run in five innings in his debut vs. Seattle, struggled in giving up seven earned runs in 3 1⁄3 innings against the Diamondbacks, and then shined on June 22 when he threw six scoreless innings to record his first win.
The Rockies made some changes to complete their 40-man roster earlier on Friday to fill the vacancy left by Jake Bird’s move to the 10-day IL. Colorado called up RHP reliever Riley Pint and infielder Aaron Schunk, while also designating Alan Trejo for assignment. Check out the article by Purple Row’s Skyler Timmins for more details.
The Rockies are going with an interesting lineup as Gold Glove center fielder Brenton Doyle will DH for the Rockies while Sam Hilliard plays center field.
