It’s a duel of the southpaws on the South Side
The Colorado Rockies will attempt to score more than three runs today and hopefully avoid the sweep against the Chicago White Sox. This morning, they DFA’d Elehuris Montero and Aaron Schunk will be making his first MLB start this afternoon.
Kyle Freeland (0-3, 9.55 ERA) will take the ball for the Rockies, his second start since coming off the 60-day IL. In his last outing, Freeland no-hit the Washington Nationals through 5 1⁄3 innings on 69 pitches, striking out four. It was his first quality start since September 11, 2023 against the Chicago Cubs. Today’s start marks Freeland’s 185th as a Rockie, which ties him with Jeff Francis for third-most in franchise history. He has faced the White Sox three times, and has a 3-0 record and 1.80 ERA. He has also recorded two quality starts. In his last start against the White Sox on August 19, 2023 at Coors Field, Freeland threw five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. He last started at Guaranteed Rate Field on September 14, 2022 and threw 6 2⁄3 scoreless innings with seven hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
Freeland will face White Sox ace Garrett Crochet (6-6, 3.05 ERA). Crochet was the White Sox first-round pick in the 2020 draft, going 11th overall, and made his MLB debut in September of that year. He had Tommy John surgery in 2022, but in 2024, Crochet is making a case for himself to be named to the All-Star Squad. In his last outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Crochet threw 5 2⁄3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts and one hit batter. Today will mark Crochet’s first-career start against the Colorado Rockies.
Can they avoid the sweep?
