K-Free is still in search of his first win of the season
With the Royals in town for a three-game series and another fireworks display set for Friday night, the Rockies make progress in two areas with a win: they could give Kyle Freeland (0-3, 7.94 ERA) a shot at his first win of the season and they could win two in a row at home for the first time since May 26-27.
This will be Freeland’s sixth start of the year and third after returning from the 60-day IL with a left elbow strain. Even though he hasn’t recorded a win in his two starts back, he’s put up a 1.42 ERA in 12 2/3 innings against the Nationals and White Sox.
LHP Cole Ragans will be on the mound for Kansas City. Ragans, 26, is 5-6 on the season with a 3.33 ERA. He was in the grove for a big chunk of May and June with a 1.84 ERA over eight starts before the Guardians tagged him for five runs in 4 2/3 innings in his last start. Ragans, who ranks No. 2 in the American League with 126 strikeouts this season, faced the Rockies once last year and put up two scoreless innings of relief when he was with the Texas Rangers.
After missing one game with a sore calf, Brenton Doyle will be back in center field for Colorado. Former Rockie Garrett Hampson is starting in center field for Kansas City.
