Rockies open a 3-game series vs. the Mets in New York tonight

Tanner Gordon will be back in action tonight, seeing if he can chalk up his first win by doing what he does best: pounding the strike zone.

The 26-year-old RHP, who came to Colorado from Atlanta in the 2023 trade with Victor Vodnik for Pierce Johnson, made his MLB debut on July 7 against Kansas City at Coors Field. In 6 ¹⁄₃ innings, he gave up five runs on eight hits — most notably two homers that accounted for three runs. He struck out four and walked none with 62 of his 78 pitches for strikes (79.5%).

Sean Manaea (5-3, 3.43 ERA) will be on the mound for New York. The 32-year-old LHP spent his first six years with Oakland before being traded to San Diego in 2022. After one season with the Padres, he signed with the Giants in 2023 and was picked up as a free agent by the Mets this year. Manaea has been on fire in July, posting a 0.69 ERA in 13 innings over two starts against the Nationals and Pirates.

The Mets are up 118-107 in the all-time series against the Rockies, but hold a bigger advantage in New York at 73-42. However, the Rockies went 2-1 at Citi Field against the Mets last year. The Mets (47-45) are 6-4 in their last 10 games, including coming off a sweep of the Washington Nationals. The Rockies (33-61) are 4-6 in their last 10 games, including the most recent 3-1 series loss against the Reds. This is the first showdown between the Rockies and Mets this season and New York will head to Colorado for a three-game series Aug. 6-8.

This is the last series before the All-Star break. The Rockies are sending third baseman Ryan McMahon to his first Midsummer Classic, while the Mets will be represented by first baseman and slugger Pete Alonso.
