Now that we’ve revealed them a few at a time, it’s time to show them all in one place
After revealing the Purple Row community’s Colorado Rockies top prospect list over the last few weeks, it’s time to show the whole list at once with some voting stats. I’ll also have some thoughts on the state of the system as a whole tomorrow to conclude the series.
Without further ado, here is the full mid-season 2024 Top 30 PuRPs list, including some voting stats:
This time around, 2023’s first-round pick, pitcher Chase Dollander (16 of 35 first place votes), edged out 2024’s first-rounder, outfielder/third baseman Charlie Condon (14 of 35 first place votes, including mine). Pre-season No. 1 PuRP Adael Amador got two first place votes and settled into third place. Also receiving at least one first place vote were outfielders Zac Veen and Yanquiel Fernandez, who rounded out the top five.
As a reminder, 30 points were granted for a first place vote, 29 for second, etc. Until a player was named on 12 ballots, his vote totals were modified on a sliding scale to avoid an individual ballot having too much say over the community forecast. In this edition of the list, this rule was applied to PuRP 29, Warming Bernabel. There were no ties on the top 30, though ties were broken for non top-30 players according to voting rules. Polling concluded in early August and since then, no player receiving votes has left the system, though a couple of PuRPs have nearly exhausted their rookie eligibility.
For more info on voting numbers for players that didn’t quite make the top 30, please check out the intro post to this edition of the PuRPs list, two articles’ worth of multi-ballot players (Part I and Part II) as well as the write-ups of the honorable mention PuRPs.
Some more notes:
- The top 19 players were listed on at least 34 of the 35 ballots — 15 were named on each ballot. Beyond that, the entire top 21 was listed on at least 30 of the 35 ballots and the top 26 PuRPs were listed on more than half of rankings.
- A record 72 players received at least one vote for this PuRPs list (up from 57 last time), 58 got mentioned on multiple ballots (up from 42), while 31 were named on at least 12 ballots (and therefore were unmodified). Here is a link to the polling thread.
- In this edition of the PuRPs list, there were eight new names compared to the pre-season 2024 list. Four of them — Condon (2), Brody Brecht (11), Jared Thomas (20), and Cole Messina (28) — were acquired in the draft, while Ashly Andujar (24) was an international free agent this year, Greg Jones (26) was acquired in a trade, while both Kyle Karros (14) and Angel Chivilli (25) were already in the system.
- Among those who were on the pre-season list, the biggest risers were Carson Palmquist (up 8 slots), Ryan Ritter (up 6), Sean Sullivan (up 5), Robert Calaz (up 5), and Jack Mahoney (up 5). The biggest fallers who remained on the list were Sterlin Thompson (down 12), Bernabel (down 12), Mason Albright (down 10), Dyan Jorge (down 9), and Benny Montgomery (down 8).
- Breaking the list down by position, there are 12 pitchers (most of which are nominally starters with a few relievers; nine are righties, three are southpaws, and just three are in the top ten), 2-5 corner infielders, 5-10 outfielders, 4-6 middle infielders, and 2-3 catchers — there’s some positional flexibility in there of course.
I’ll have more on the overall system in my concluding post tomorrow!
