They made dubious history first, but they did it!
Tonight was an exciting one! Not only did the Colorado Rockies score, but they also hit a home run! They also got to 10 home runs on the season, so overall it was a better hitting day.
Unfortunately, though, the pitching struggled again and the Rockies ended up losing 5-3.
Senza struggles early
Antonio Senzatela was not sharp tonight. After giving up a leadoff single to Shohei Ohtani, Senzatela gave up a first-pitch home run to Mookie Betts to put the Dodgers up 2-0 early. He then gave up a single to Freddie Freeman, before getting Will Smith to fly out to right and inducing a 3-6-3 double play to Michael Conforto.
The second inning was better, as he only allowed one baserunner (Max Muncy) by hitting him. The third inning got ugly — a home run to Ohtani, a ground out, a double, a single, and another double play — and the fourth wasn’t great either. He allowed two baserunners, but luckily neither of them scored.
Senza faced Betts again in the fifth, giving up a double. Freeman grounded out, but then Smith singled to bring Betts home and rack the score up to 4-0. And after that, Bud Black had seen enough, bringing in Luis Peralta to relieve Senzatela.
Senzatela’s final line: 4 1⁄3 innings, nine hits, four runs, one walk, one strikeout, two home runs.
Martinis all around!
They did it! Our nightmare is over! The Rockies finally scored a run!
But, of course, not before making dubious history.
In the fifth inning, the Rockies set a new record for consecutive innings without scoring a run (33). However, Nick Martini — the man who did it all tonight — came through. He hit a single (that could’ve been ruled an error, to be honest) and became the Rockies third baserunner of the night. He was also the Rockies only baserunner to this point, but that’s another story.
But then Kyle Farmer took being called “Karl” by the Dodgers’ PA announcer personally, and hit a standup double to knock in Martini. It was a good way to shake things up after a stale three days in California.
In total, Martini went 2-for-4 with a run and Farmer went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Hunter’s a good man
Not only did the Rockies score a run for the first time since Thursday, they also hit a home run for the first time since the first inning of that game when Brenton Doyle hit a solo shot in the 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
In the seventh inning, not only did Mickey Moniak get on base (a sharp single to center), but then Hunter Goodman stepped up to the plate and squared up a 94-MPH fastball to center field to hang a crooked number and put the Rockies almost within striking distance.
Unfortunately, it was the end of the scoring, and they still fell 5-3.
Up Next
The Rockies will look to keep their scoring streak alive tomorrow against the Dodgers. Ryan Feltner will take the mound against Dodgers’ right-hander Landon Knack. First pitch is at 8:10pm MT.
See you there!
