Luck Finally Comes Around for the Rockies After a Successful Weekend

May 14, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

For the first month and a half of this season, the Colorado Rockies were likely to hit a new franchise low. In the 13 series they’ve played in thus far, the Rockies just won their first series with a huge sweep against the defending champion Texas Rangers. In this three-game series, the defending champs were outscored 15-6. This series doesn’t change Colorado’s disastrous start. Still, a sweep against the 2023 World Series champions has to instill a lot of confidence throughout this team’s locker room as their struggles have been enormous and tough to handle. The Rockies will now ride the momentum of a four-game win streak and face the San Diego Padres in another three-game series. Colorado could surprise many if they win or even sweep the Padres in that series. This team certainly needs to keep their winning ways in motion now at 12-28.

Rockies Sweep Defending Champs

The Offense

After struggling mightily at the plate, Charlie Blackmon started to turn things around in this series against the Rangers. The 37-year-old went three for eight with batting in four out of the 15 Rockies runs this series. Although he struggled in the series, Ezequiel Tovar was instrumental in yesterday’s 3-1 win as his two-run home run during the bottom of the fourth inning was instrumental in the Rockies getting the victory. During the first two games of the series against the defending champs, Rockies catcher Elías Díaz went four for nine with two runs batted in. In game two of this series, an 8-3 win, backup catcher Jacob Stallings went one for four driving two runs in. Throughout this series, Colorado scored 15 runs on 31 hits. If this success can continue for the Rockies offense, they’ll look like a completely new team from how they started.

The Pitching Staff

Colorado’s pitching staff gave up six runs on 23 hits against the defending champs. They allowed two runs on five hits, three on eight hits, and one on nine hits during this series. Austin Gomber took the mound for the first game. He pitched six and two third innings allowing one run on five hits and two walks. Gomber also struck out five in the win. Ryan Feltner hailed the mound in the second game. Feltner allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Finally, Rockies relief pitcher Ty Blach got the start in the final game of the series. Blach pitched five innings. The 33-year-old relief pitcher allowed one run on seven hits while striking out two batters. Colorado’s bullpen has been known to be shaky. However, during this three-game series, the bullpen only allowed one run.

Can the Rockies Continue Their Success?

The Rockies four-game win streak just shows once again that anything can happen in a long 162-game season. This team has been embarrassed time after time again this season, yet yesterday the Rockies shocked the baseball world by sweeping the defending champs. This team has a long way to go. Yet, if they somehow sweep the Padres there may be a bright side closing in on the Centennial State.
