The Colorado Rockies have made their first acquisition of the young off-season.
On Saturday afternoon the Colorado Rockies made their first move of the nascent off-season, acquiring utility infielder Owen Miller from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for cash considerations. The move was first reported by Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Miller—originally drafted by the San Diego Padres with a third round pick in 2018—has spent parts of four seasons in the majors: two each with the Cleveland Guardians and the Brewers. He carries a career -0.9 rWAR per Baseball Reference while hitting .239/.287/.345 over a career 1,015 at-bats with 15 home runs, 99 RsBI, and 17 stolen bases.
Miller’s primary value comes in his speed and defensive skills. In 2023 with the Brewers, he carried top ranks in fielding range with eight outs above average and clocked in at 29 feet per second in sprint speed. He has spent the bulk of his professional career as a first and second baseman but is capable of playing all infield positions as well as right and left field.
In 2024 Miller appeared in just 14 games with the Brewers, hitting just .185/.185/.222 in 27 at-bats with one double and three RBI. He was designated for assignment on July 1st and outrighted to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.
Now 27 years old, Miller is out of minor league options. However, he represents a cheap and defensively skilled veteran glove for a team looking to shed payroll heading into 2025.
