After being cut by the Angels, the outfielder has found a new home in the mountains
As announced by Mr. Rockies News himself, Thomas Harding, the Colorado Rockies have signed outfielder Mickey Moniak to a Major League deal, just days before the regular season is set to begin.
Moniak was most recently seen playing for the Los Angeles Angels. In 21 games this spring, he slashed .173/.224/.346 and recorded a double, triple, and two home runs before being released on Tuesday.
Moniak, a former first overall draft pick back in 2016, has largely struggled at the Major League level. He wasn’t able to find consistency in the Philadelphia Phillies organization (amassing a -1.6 bWAR in his time out east) and was subsequently traded to the Angels in the Noah Syndergaard deal.
His best work came in 2023, which saw him slash a solid .280/.307/.495 and act as an effective fourth outfielder for LA. After a tough spring training, though, the Angels have decided to move on from Moniak, allowing the Rockies to sign him.
Moniak will likely serve in a similar role with Colorado, spelling any of Nick Martini, Brenton Doyle, and either Sean Bouchard or Jordan Beck (as Moniak can play all three outfield positions). If he plays well, he may be able to wrest control of a corner outfield spot from one of the projected starters, though that remains to be seen.
Moniak may be under team control through 2027, dependent on arbitration.
