More things happened this week! At the conclusion of the game on Sunday, it was announced that the Colorado Rockies were going to finally call up Zac Veen (No. 4 PuRP) for his long-awaited debut, on the heels of Chase Dollander making his first MLB start earlier that day.
After his initial assignment to Triple-A Albuquerque out of camp, Veen proved why he should’ve made the Opening Day Roster by slashing .387/472/.677 with four doubles, one triple, one homer, eight RBI, four walks, six strikeouts and one stolen base (in two attempts). Oh, and he did all of that in just eight games. Since his debut on Tuesday evening, Veen has played in three games, recording two hits, one RBI, one walk and one strikeout. He attempted to steal a base, but was caught. And the “Veen Machine” made sure his first hit was memorable:
Next up, the Rockies head to the west coast to face the formidable San Diego Padres (11-3) and Los Angeles Dodgers (11-4). Both teams started off hot, but have cooled in recent days.
After starting 7-0, the Padres have gone 4-3 in their last six games — losing two of three to the Chicago Cubs, and taking two of three from the Athletics. However, they are 8-0 at home for the first time in franchise history. Now, the Padres and Rockies always have weird series every year, and the Rox are 275-254 all-time again the Friars. Last year, they went 8-5 overall and are 87-97 at Petco Park. Can they channel some of the weirdness into their first series win of the year?
On Monday, they then drive up the I-5 to Chavez Ravine to face the Dodgers. The Dodgers also got off to a scorching 8-0 start, but have gone 3-4 in their last six games — losing back-to-back series against the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals. They were so hot, in fact, that we talked in the Purple Row Slack Room about which would happen first: the Rockies hit a home run or the Dodgers lose? The answer was that Mickey Moniak hit the Rockies’ first home run of the season on March 30 to end the drought, while the Dodgers lost their first game on April 4.
These two ballparks have not historically been Rockies-friendly, but anything can happen!
