Colorado Rockies news and links for Thursday, August 29, 2024
We’re fast entering the homestretch of the Colorado Rockies 2024 season.
This morning, Patrick Lyons of Just Baseball posted this:
The toughest remaining schedule in MLB belongs to the Colorado Rockies who need to go 13-15 in order to avoid losing 100 games for the second year in a row. pic.twitter.com/QAAUJ6AxvE

As the embedded graphic points out, the Rockies will now face
- Baltimore Orioles
- Atlanta Braves
- Milwaukee Brewers
- Detroit Tigers
- Chicago Cubs
- Arizona Diamondbacks
- Los Angeles Dodgers (twice!)
- St. Louis Cardinals
That’s a lot of contending teams.
So let’s hear your predictions: How will the Rockies fare for the rest of the season?
And will it have any effect on the Rockies’ planning for 2025?
We’ve hit a few snags this morning at Purple Row, so apologies for the abbreviated Rockpile. I’ll try to add links to a few articles when my morning settles down.

On the Farm
Triple-A: Reno Aces 3, Albuquerque Isotopes 1
Carson Palmquist (no. 10 PuRP) and the Isotopes pitching staff performed admirably, but the ‘Topes offense was unable to come alive despite having seven hits and three walks against the Aces.
Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats 4, Binghamton Rumble Ponies 3
Antonio Senzatela continued his rehab assignment with a solid enough start against the Rumble Ponies. Senzatela threw 54 pitches over four innings of work and struck out five batters. He allowed three earned runs on five hits, including a home run. Zach Agnos (no. 35 PuRP) earned the win with a two strikeout, hitless ninth inning and the Yard Goats sealed the victory with a Sterlin Thompson (no. 17 PuRP) walk-off.
High-A: Spokane Indians 9, Tri-City Dust Devils 5
Dyan Jorge (no. 18 PuRP) drove in three of the Indians’ nine runs with a 3-for-4 evening while Cole Carrigg (no. 12 PuRP) drew two walks of the Indians’ five total. Jack Mahoney had a solid five inning start but did give up two home runs as part of seven hits. He struck out five batters over five innings. Reliever Sam Weatherly continued his shutout streak since being promoted to High-A. He has now gone six appearances and 7 1⁄3 innings without allowing a run.
Low-A: Visalia Rawhide 6, Fresno Grizzlies 5
The Grizzlies struck out ten times with no walks as they fell short to the Rawhide. Only Darius Perry recorded multiple hits. The Grizzlies’ pitching staff struck out nine batters but only Nathan Blasick was able to keep any runs from scoring during his sole inning of work.

Bard hasn’t authored his final verse in majors | MLB.com
As it turns out, the Bard’s tale might not yet be finished. Rockies reliever Daniel Bard lost the final season of his contract due to needing surgery on his right elbow flexor tendon. At the time he had yet to decide if he would further pursue his big league career. Now 39-years-old, Bard will aim for an improbable comeback once again.
Injuries & Moves: Vodnik progressing in throwing program | MLB.com
The Rockies believe late innings reliever Victor Vodnik will be able to pitch again this season. On Wednesday he began throwing from distance as he ramps up in his recovery from inflammation of the right biceps. Lefty Lucas Gilbreath is also hoping to return before the end of the season, but admits to being frustrated with the many setbacks he’s had since his Tommy John surgery.
“I can’t seem to figure out what’s going on,” Gilbreath said. “Every time I think I’m over the hump, it seems to take three steps back.”
