Colorado Rockies news and links for Thursday, November 28, 2024
Yeah, okay, it’s a little hokey, but what can I say? I’m sentimental.
I mean, yeah, things could be better. We’re not the Dodgers, who have seemingly endless pockets and, despite just winning the World Series, are only getting better. But, hey, we still love baseball, and we still, on this day of reflection and gratitude, have plenty to look back on with thanks.
At the end of the day, we still have our team, which is more than some can say. Things are far, far from perfect on 20th and Blake, but we still come together to celebrate our love for Colorado baseball here on Purple Row, and it’s timely that we take stock of these moments together — especially now!
So, with all that said, let’s talk about what I believe are some reasons to be grateful for Rockies baseball.
Charlie Blackmon’s amazing career
Probably the most expected and obvious of my picks today, it’s important to once again take a moment to appreciate the fantastic career of our longtime outfielder. I can’t be the only one for whom it’s still strange to consider that he’ll no longer be in the lineup and roaming right field — but that’s why we should take a moment to look back on the memories we share with one of the greatest Rockies of all time as we await his deserved number retirement ceremony.
Rockies prospects
As we salute the past, we also look to the future. While there’s, of course, no certain future when it comes to these young ballplayers, Colorado currently boasts some intriguing and exciting prospects in their organization. There’s virtually no one reading this that isn’t already aware of these high-ceiling talents, but it’s worth mentioning how many tantalizing newcomers are waiting in the wings for their shot at the big leagues.
We saw the long-awaited debut of Drew Romo last season, so who will be the next wunderkind to stake their claim in MLB? With speculation that Zac Veen or Carson Palmquist could be donning the purple pinstripes next season, we could be on the precipice of even more “welcome to the show” moments.
More awards are coming to Coors
Speaking of young’ns, one of the great joys of recent seasons has been bearing witness to the ascension of burgeoning stars such as Brenton Doyle and Ezeqiuel Tovar, and that trend continued last year. That duo will once again be honored for their efforts as both were named Gold Glove Award winners after their exemplary defensive performances.
The Rockies have often been fortunate enough to feature fantastic defense (much of which is owing to the excellent work of coach Warren Schaeffer), such as the “Coors Shield” from a few seasons ago, but now they have two genuinely phenomenal athletes up the middle.
I mean, how could you not love these two when they’re making spectacular highlight reel plays like that?
Coors Field
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Coors Field is a great ballpark. That may be common knowledge, but it’s still a fact that our beloved baseball building is as gorgeous and spacious as ever.
With the exciting news that the Savannah Bananas are coming to town next August, more folks will be able to experience Coors than ever before. This, plus the fun theme days that are offered every season such as Harry Potter Night and Star Wars Night, make the park a premier destination in downtown Denver.
It’s also pertinent to shout out the hardest-working grounds crew in the game. Through rain, sleet, shine, or any calamity that may occur, Mark Razum and the gang keep our ballpark looking absolutely beautiful day in and day out. We’re very lucky to have them.
I know it’s a bit of a meme that Coors is just Denver’s fanciest bar, but we should take a second to genuinely appreciate the greatest colosseum in Colorado.
